Either Side Rag Rug
Yarns of your choice
Now, this should be one of the easiest items you'll ever crochet! The idea is that you get rid of some of that stash that you don't know what to do with. Use any color you want and really go wild with this one! You'll end up with quite an interesting rug with tassels on one side and plain single crochet on the other.
First you cut pieces of worsted weight yarn about 18 inches or more in length. Different lengths are of course fine.
You then knot the two ends of yarn together and leave a 1 1/2 to 2 inch tail; wind the yarn into a ball as you go along. After you have a pretty good sized ball of yarn, you can start to make your rug. I usually make quite a few balls so I can crochet for a good while before gathering more pieces together.
Just a note before you start:
This rug is fully crocheted using the sc stitch.
Remember to leave the tail ends on one side of the rug so you'll get that reversible rag rug effect. One side will have tassels and the other side will be plain sc stitch.
Using a size H (5) hook,
Ch 101,
Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each ch across; ch 1 and turn. (100 st)
Row 2: Sc in each sc across; ch 1 and turn.
You should continue this way until the rug is the desired length. Somewhere between 3-4 feet is a pretty good size.
Fasten off and weave in ends depending on how you're finishing off.
There are two ways to finish off this rug. You can either do a sc border around the entire rug, or you can add a fringe.
SC Border
With this finishing you don't necessarily have to fasten off. You can just continue crocheting and when you get to the corner, sc 3 times in the corner and then continue along the length of the rug. Repeat all the way around the rug and join in top of the 1st corner sc st. Fasten off and weave in ends. (You can do a few more rows of this if desired, in which case, after you join, ch 1, 2 sc in same st and then continue as previously instructed.)
Fringe
Cut 8 inch lengths of yarn for each st across the short ends of the rug. Fold strand in half. Insert hook in first st, pick up folded end of strand and bring through st to form a loop. Pull free ends through the loop and tighten. Repeat for each st across both short ends.
Enjoy your rug!!
